Service Summary

An occupational therapist helps you resume everyday tasks — self-care, work, leisure — after illness or injury, through retraining, adaptation and equipment.

Possible Side Effects

Occupational therapy is non-invasive, and most of what people notice afterwards is the cost of effort rather than any harm from the treatment. Rehearsing a task you can no longer do easily is tiring: a session spent on dressing, transfers, kitchen work or a return-to-work routine commonly leaves people fatigued for the rest of the day, and that fatigue can be pronounced if you are recovering from a stroke, a brain injury, a long illness or major surgery. Expect it, plan to rest afterwards, and say so if it is not settling — the programme is meant to be graded to what you can sustain, and the grading only works if your therapist knows how the last session left you. The second common effect is emotional rather than physical. Occupational therapy works by examining, in detail and out loud, the gap between what you used to do and what you can do now, and people are often surprised how directly that lands: frustration, irritability, tearfulness or low mood during or after a session are common, and they are not a sign that the therapy is going badly. Tell your therapist if it happens, because the pace and the order of goals can be changed, and psychological support alongside rehabilitation is a normal part of care. Equipment and adaptations carry a caution of their own. A grab rail, a raised seat, a walking aid, a splint, a modified utensil or a change to your kitchen is prescribed for the function you have on the day it is prescribed; as you improve — or if you deteriorate — a device that was appropriate can become useless or actively unsafe, and an ill-fitting aid can cause skin pressure, contribute to a fall, or quietly take over a movement you could have kept. Treat every recommendation as something to be reviewed as your function changes, and go back to a therapist instead of modifying equipment yourself. Finally, occupational therapy addresses the consequences of a condition, not the condition itself. It does not replace the medication, surgery, specialist follow-up or investigations your doctor has advised, and it is not the right first response to a new problem: sudden weakness, new numbness, a fall causing injury, a change in speech or vision, chest pain, or an acute change in alertness or confusion need medical assessment, not a rescheduled session.
