Why do Hemodialysis at IKAN?

Overview

At IKAN in Nafplio, chronic hemodialysis is delivered as both classic hemodialysis (HD) and online hemodiafiltration (online HDF) on B. Braun machines capable of all dialysis methods, using German-specification dialysis filters with synthetic membranes and a water-treatment system with backup for municipal-supply interruptions. The center operates a Dialysis Hall, a Seropositivity Unit for seropositive patients and an Emergency Unit, and a nephrologist is present throughout every session. IKAN treats both permanent residents of the Argolida region and patients visiting Nafplio on holiday.

When you book, choose the weekly package that fits your treatment. The minimum booking is three sessions (one week).

  • Weekly package – 3 hemodialysis (HD) sessions: €700
  • Weekly package – 3 online hemodiafiltration (online HDF) sessions: €775
What is Included

Each hemodialysis or online hemodiafiltration session includes:

  • A pre-dialysis assessment by a nephrologist
  • The full HD or online HDF session on B. Braun machines, with all consumables (dialyser, bloodlines, needles, saline)
  • Erythropoietin (EPO) and intravenous iron administration when clinically prescribed
  • Nursing care throughout treatment, with ECG and blood-pressure monitoring during the session
  • A post-session discharge assessment and a written session report for the patient's treating physician on request
  • Comfort during treatment: an adjustable electric bed with remote control, a personal TV with headphones, complimentary WiFi and a tablet, and a light meal
  • For patients travelling from remote parts of Argolida (Hermioni, Kranidi, Porto Cheli), transport by the center's 12-seat adapted van, with an ambulance for emergencies
What to Expect

Before your first session you submit recent medical records — your latest dialysis summary, blood results, Kt/V, and HIV/HBV/HCV status — which the nephrologist reviews to confirm your treatment parameters and to schedule sessions around your travel dates. On the day, you arrive about 15 minutes early; the nursing team prepares your vascular access (fistula, graft or catheter) and you are monitored continuously throughout the session, with refreshments provided. Afterwards your vital signs are checked, a written session summary is issued, and follow-up with your home nephrologist is available on request. Seropositive patients are treated in the dedicated Seropositivity Unit, and emergency dialysis is available through the Emergency Unit.

Duration

A hemodialysis or online hemodiafiltration session lasts about four hours, and most patients have three sessions a week; allowing for the pre-session assessment, plan for roughly four and a half hours per visit. The minimum booking is three sessions (one week), and the treating nephrologist sets each patient's exact schedule.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations are accepted with a full refund up to 7 days before the first scheduled session, and a 50% refund between 7 and 3 days before. For cancellations less than 3 days before the first session no refund applies, except for a documented medical emergency, in which case the amount is credited in full toward rescheduled sessions.

Service Summary

Hemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment that filters waste, excess salts and fluid from the blood when the kidneys can no longer do so adequately on their own.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects of a hemodialysis session are low blood pressure, muscle cramps, nausea, headache, fatigue and itching, all of which are usually transient and managed during the session by the nephrology and nursing team. Vascular access complications (clotting, infection, bleeding from a fistula or graft, catheter-related bloodstream infection) can occur and require prompt attention. Long-term hemodialysis is also associated with anaemia, bone-mineral disturbances, cardiovascular strain and the practical burden of a treatment schedule of multiple sessions per week — these are managed by your home nephrology team. Always travel with a recent dialysis prescription, current serology and the contact details of your home unit.
