About the Clinic
Emmetropia Ophthalmology Clinic, with locations in Heraklion and Rethymno, Crete, is a prominent provider of advanced eye care services. Founded and directed by Dr. Ioannis Aslanidis, the only Greek ophthalmologist currently elected Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), the clinic is recognized for its high standards and innovation. It was the first private ophthalmology center in Greece to receive ISO 9001 certification reported as 2006 or 2008 and the only clinic in Crete licensed as a One Day Clinic (O.D.C.) unit in ophthalmology since 2011. Emmetropia prides itself on utilizing the latest diagnostic and treatment technology, including the AMARIS 750S laser system, and was one of five global centers involved in developing the Schwind Amaris refractive laser platform.
The clinic’s scientific team, led by Dr. Aslanidis (also President of the Hellenic College of Ophthalmology and an AME-1 examiner for the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority), is heavily involved in research, contributing to over 300 publications and presentations. Emmetropia is a model reference center for refractive surgery, training numerous international fellows, and collaborates with the University of Wenzhou (China) on keratoconus gene therapy research. Patient reviews often highlight friendly staff and successful outcomes, contributing to a positive reputation.
Services
Emmetropia offers a broad spectrum of ophthalmological services. In refractive surgery, they address myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism, notably pioneering the All Surface Laser Ablation (ASLA) technique developed by Dr. Aslanidis since 2009. Other options include Phakic Intraocular Lens Implantation and Refractive Lens Exchange. The clinic provides comprehensive care for corneal conditions like keratoconus (including surgery, transplantation, and the first crosslinking in Crete in 2006), cataract diagnosis and surgery, and glaucoma diagnosis and treatment.
Extensive care for retinal and vitreous conditions includes treatments for retinal/vitreous detachment, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (wet and dry), retinitis pigmentosa, and vitreous surgery (vitrectomy). Intravitreal injections are administered for various conditions. Pediatric ophthalmology services cover amblyopia treatment and eye exams. General eye care includes specialist consultations, an oculoplastics department, and comprehensive examinations (refraction, visual acuity, biomicroscopy, tonometry, fundoscopy). Advanced diagnostics like corneal topography/tomography, visual fields testing, ultrasound, and OCT are utilized. Pre-assessments for refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and keratoconus are available. The clinic also mentions a “R.A.D.A.R. Method,” though details require clarification.

Referred by partner clinic in Rethymno for repair of detached retina. Very well staffed and appointed clinic. Nurses were pleasant and efficient. Medical staff were also kind and reassuring, and very professional. The anaesthetist, visiting surgical specialist Mr Vartsakis and the clinic's Medical Superintendant offered first class care. Everyone's spoken English was excellent. The entrance is a little hard to find, but I would recommend Emmetropia without reservation.

The best clinic to have 10/10 vision, pleasant atmosphere and excellent doctor. The surgery I had for myopia lasted only 40 seconds and was completely painless. I recommend it to everyone who has vision problems, as it was the best choice I could have made.
