Service Summary
Colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the colon, used for screening, diagnosis and the removal of polyps in the same session, performed under sedation for comfort.
Possible Side Effects
Mild bloating, cramping and gas are common for a few hours after the exam and resolve on their own. Bowel preparation requires drinking a cleansing solution and can cause nausea, abdominal discomfort and dehydration — stay well hydrated and follow the prescribed protocol. The sedation used for patient comfort causes drowsiness, light-headedness and impaired coordination for the rest of the day, so you must arrange for an adult to accompany you home and must not drive, operate machinery or sign important documents until the next day. Serious complications such as bleeding, perforation or anaesthesia reactions are rare; the risk is slightly higher when polypectomy is performed. Disclose all current medications (especially blood thinners and diabetes medication), allergies and heart, lung or anaesthesia history when you book.
