In Greece’s Healthcare Sector, We’re Making a Mistake Nobody Wants to Admit
A Greek patient struggles to find the doctor they need for their own problem — at which clinic, at what cost, after how many repeat visits. A German patient doesn’t even know that the doctor they need exists here. The problem is the same: incomplete information and coordination. Only the distance changes.
A System That Waits for Patients
This is the mistake: we think like a system that waits for patients — not like a system that brings them in. And the fix isn’t another platform, another directory. It’s someone who takes the patient from “I don’t know where to go” and brings them to “I’m there, I know what to expect, I know the cost.”
What the Numbers Say
A recent study on health tourism in Greece, which Ι contributed to as a member of ELITOUR, states clearly:
Treatment-focused medical tourism in Greece is worth just €50 million. The same market in Europe is worth €7.1 billion, and globally $50-60 billion — forecast to reach $100-130 billion within 5 years (CAGE 15-19%).
Greece welcomes 36+ million visitors a year. Health tourism as a whole accounts for just 0.3% of them. In treatment-focused medical tourism, neighboring Turkey makes $2.5 billion a year — roughly 46 times more than Greece.
Greece ranks 19th in the world for wellness tourism revenue — but 5th on excellence indicators. We have the quality. We don’t have the results.
The gap is no accident. We’ve built a system to care for tourists who get sick here. We don’t have a system to attract the tourists who come FOR treatment.
Why I Built Asklepieia
I built Asklepieia because I saw this gap from the inside. Before founding the company, I spent a year working with partners, and we met 100+ healthcare providers. Through the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels’ CapsuleT, we also spoke with dozens of hoteliers. One conclusion stood out again and again:
Clinics with exceptional capabilities — but invisible to the patient who needs them.
Hotels that want to embrace medical tourism — without knowing how.
Patients who come to Greece for treatment — and manage every detail on their own.
There Is No Quality Problem
We have IVF with a progressive legal framework. Dental procedures at 20-30% of the UK cost. Internationally recognized ophthalmology. There is no quality problem.
Coordination for the Patient’s Sake
We built a marketplace with more than 290 healthcare providers and 64 hotels — for the first time in Greece, united in a single ecosystem. Our goal for the next 12 months: doubling. We’re looking for our next partners.
Not technology for technology’s sake. Coordination for the patient’s sake.
We don’t bring the patient to the doctor — we show them the way.
